AUTHORITIES recovered a 1,000-pound vintage General Purpose bomb, which was unearthed at the Commission on Audit (COA) 7 compound in Barangay Tinago, Cebu City on Tuesday morning, July 8, 2025. Construction work exposed the old ordnance, prompting a swift response from police and explosive experts.

Waterfront Police Station 3 personnel received a call for assistance at 11:20 a.m. after COA 7 staff reported the discovery. Patrolman Joseph Canarejo and Patrolman Mark Jason Delima, both on beat patrol in the area, responded to the scene along MJ Cuenco Ave., corner V. Sotto St.

Discovery

Initial investigation revealed that Eric Bacus, 46, a backhoe operator for 3R Construction Company, unearthed the large bomb past 9 a.m. while working at a construction site within the compound.

Bacus, a resident of Sitio Luyongan, Barangay Lagtang, Talisay City, feared the bomb might explode and immediately alerted his co-workers, who then contacted authorities.

After confirming the presence of the large bomb, the responding officers promptly contacted the Regional Explosive and Canine Unit (Recu) 7. A team from RECU 7, led by Lt. Joel Taboada, arrived and safely removed the hazardous device. The area was declared safe following the successful retrieval. / AYB
