A HIGH-RISK biking stunt caught on video in Barangay Marigondon, Lapu-Lapu City, has ignited a citywide conversation on road safety.

The viral footage shows a young cyclist recklessly veering on his mountain bike into the path of an oncoming truck, prompting significant concern among motorists.

In response to the incident, Mayor Junard “Ahong” Chan on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, urged cyclists to wear helmets and use reflective lights when riding at night to ensure their safety on the road.

Following the viral video, Logan (not his real name), 18, surrendered to the mayor’s office at Lapu-Lapu City Hall on Wednesday morning.

He admitted he was pressured by peers, including three friends from Cebu and Lapu-Lapu, to perform the stunt. Although Logan has been cycling for five years, he confessed that he only began attempting such risky maneuvers in 2025.

This was the second time Logan performed the stunt at the same location; the first involved a modern public utility vehicle in February or March. A guardian accompanying him stated that Logan’s family was unaware of his behavior outside the home, despite having given him repeated warnings.

“I apologize for what I did and promise not to repeat it. To all bikers, please don’t follow my example because it’s dangerous,” Logan said in Cebuano.

While the teenager is from Cordova, the incident drew concern from Chan, as it endangered both public safety and the well-being of the young cyclist. He emphasized that biking is a great form of exercise but should be done safely and within designated areas.

No formal charges will be filed against the youngster for this incident. However, Chan warned that any future violations of this nature would result in legal penalties.

As part of ongoing vigilance and awareness efforts, Chan has also requested to meet with Logan’s peers, some as young as 12 to 13 years old, to discourage them from engaging in similar risky behavior.

Safety measures

Despite growing traffic congestion in Lapu-Lapu City, the bike lane remains open and accessible to cyclists, Chan said

The roads are quite narrow and the number of vehicles is steadily increasing. However, during heavy traffic, bicycles can easily weave through and often reach their destinations faster than cars, Chan added.

He added the importance of strict compliance with regulations and the mandatory use of helmets and reflectors, particularly during nighttime riding, to prevent accidents.  / DPC
