VISAYAN Electric and Aboitiz Foundation Inc. (AFI) have teamed up to offer scholarship opportunities to exceptional students at the University of the Philippines (UP) Cebu.
“When we have quality education, we can provide quality skills ready for the industry,” remarked Dr. Carl Milos Bulilan, UPC Assistant to the Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs.
The scholarship will provide 12 "Iskolars ng Bayan" with a P10,000 monthly stipend, along with subsidies for a gadget and board review. These benefits will continue until the scholars complete their degree programs, provided they meet the minimum academic requirements.
Starting Academic Year 2025-2026, a new group of scholars will be awarded each academic year as part of this long-term collaboration. The first group of recipients will be selected from incoming sophomore students who have maintained an average grade of 2.0 or higher for at least 15 units, with no failing grades.
“For the students, this is not just about the financial assistance program. This is also an investment for your potential,” said Nico Arancillo, Senior Assistant Vice President - Engineering Technical Support Officer-in-charge at Visayan Electric.
Beyond the financial support, chosen scholars will also receive internship opportunities at Visayan Electric that align with their studies.
Visayan Electric has previously supported UP Cebu through various student initiatives. Its parent company, AboitizPower, has also been a long-time supporter of UP Cebu, particularly its varsity program. AFI has also partnered with UP Cebu for the past scholarship programs.
The signing of the Memorandum of Agreement marks the return of formal financial assistance to the university. (PR)
