FOUR entries from SunStar Davao journalists have been named finalists for the 11th Globe Media Excellence Awards (GMEA@11), as announced on Friday, December 13, 2024.
Marianne L. Saberon-Abalavan’s “From Frankenspikes to Golden Dreams” and Ralph Lawrence Llemit’s “TFD Soldier’s Viral Act of Kindness” are vying for Online News Report of the Year.
Meanwhile, Bree Porras’ “No More Barricades” is vying for Photo of the Year, and Llemit also received a nomination for Best Social Media Video with “Soldier Prays for Ill Child on Oxygen.”
With the theme #IgnitingProgress, GMEA celebrates media practitioners who inspire change, champion sustainability, and embrace digital innovation through compelling narratives.
This year, GMEA broadened its reach to include provincial media from Luzon alongside entries from Visayas and Mindanao, showcasing a diverse range of stories nationwide.
"Storytelling is a powerful tool that connects people, fosters understanding, and inspires action within communities. Through these awards, we honor individuals who demonstrate courage and innovation in shaping a more inclusive and progressive society,” said Yoly Crisanto, Globe's chief sustainability and corporate communications officer.
The winners of GMEA@11 will be announced in January 2025, recognizing outstanding achievements in three categories: Special Awards, Digital Storytelling, and Integrated Media. Finalists were selected based on their creative use of digital media, societal impact, and alignment with the theme #IgnitingProgress.
In 2023, the SunStar Davao team won three prestigious titles at the 10th GMEA held at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Cebu City. Ace June Rell Perez was awarded Social Media Advocacy of the Year for Digital (Mindanao). Mark Anthony Perandos received Photo of the Year for Digital (Mindanao), and Marianne Saberon-Abalayan earned the #KWENTONGTAGUMPAY: Uplifting Lives Through Digital Technology (Community) award for Mindanao.
Since its inception in 2012, GMEA has recognized the achievements of Filipino storytellers. The awards aim to inspire journalists and social media advocates to create impactful stories that promote social justice and the common good. DEF
