DAVAO City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte welcomed Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Jonvic Remulla's recent statement that aid distributions should not be politicized by barangay officials.

In a January 14, 2025, statement, Duterte expressed his support for Remulla’s position, saying that fairness in aid distribution should extend to protecting public programs from exploitation.

He said that the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is responsible for managing aid, ensuring it remains under the agency’s control.

“This fairness extends to protecting public programs from exploitation, ensuring DSWD aid remains solely under the agency’s management,” he said.

Duterte further pointed out that public servants must protect the integrity of government programs and resources. He underscored that aid should be distributed solely by DSWD, without involvement from politicians or private individuals.

Earlier, Remulla, speaking at a DSWD event in Davao City on January 6, 2025, urged barangay officials to prioritize fairness and set aside politics to ensure peaceful processes ahead of the midterm elections. He also highlighted the right of all candidates to connect with voters, regardless of political affiliation.

In addition, Duterte called for neutrality from the Philippine National Police (PNP), raising concerns over reports of some PNP personnel pressuring barangay officials to allow politically motivated activities. He reminded barangay captains that they have the authority to reject such activities, especially if they involve private individuals.

“Let us uphold fairness, neutrality, and accountability to prioritize the welfare of all Dabawenyos,” he said. RGP
