THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) reported that the Bucana Bridge Project is almost complete.
In a report, the DPWH said that the Bucana Bridge Project, which is a key part of the Davao City Coastal Road, is already 92.3 percent complete.
During the latest inspection by DPWH Senior Undersecretary Emil K. Sadain, the project’s progression was noted, and is expected to be completed in the last quarter of 2025.
Sadain said that the construction of the bridge is progressing steadily, with a monthly progress rate of about three to four percent. He added that they expect the project to reach a 95 percent completion rate by July 2025.
“This bridge is important because it connects to the Davao Coastal Road, making travel in and out of Davao City faster and easier, and strengthening the overall road network in the Davao Region”, he said on June 27, 2025.
One of the major accomplishments of the construction is the successful installation of the stay cables across all five piers on June 26, 2025. This marks the completion of the project’s complex structural components.
Some of the major construction milestones for the Bucana Bridge include the completion of the structural connections between abutment 0 and pier 1, pier 1 and pier 2, the sub-base laying and compaction of the approach road, and the construction of the drainage system, concrete fencing, and slope protection works at the abutment.
The department and the project’s contractor are now preparing for the connection of pier 2 and pier 3 on July 2, 2025, as well as the connection between pier 5 and abutment 1.
Sadain visited the site to assess the construction progress together with Project Directors Rodrigo I. Delos Reyes of the Unified Project Management Office – Bridges Management Cluster (UPMO-BMC) and Benjamin B. Bautista of UPMO – Roads Management Cluster I, along with the Bucana Bridge Project Team, led by Acting Project Manager Norifel Teddie G. Cadiang and Project Engineer John Christian T. Gaden.
Representatives from the China Road and Bridge Corporation, a consortium comprising CCCC Highways Consultants Co., Ltd., and the Chinese Project Management Company (CPMC), accompanied Sadain.
The Bucana Bridge features a four-lane, six-span extradosed bridge stretching 480.20 meters across Davao City. Its total length reaches 1,340 meters including the approach roads. The project’s contract cost is P3.126 billion and is funded through the China Aid Grant under the Official Development Assistance (ODA) program from the Government of the People’s Republic of China.
