DAVAO City is rolling out the red carpet for its homegrown sports heroes as it hosts "Araw ng Parangal,” a highly anticipated recognition event for 265 outstanding athletes and coaches who brought pride to the city in national competitions on Sunday, June 29, 2025, at the SMX Convention Center, SM Lanang.
The event will celebrate the achievements of Dabawenyo medalists and the mentors behind their success.
Executive program director Irene Lumanas, in an interview at the Sports Development Division of the City Mayor's Office (SDD-CMO) Monday, June 23, 2025, said, "So silang mga athletes and coaches naka-perform ng exemplary performance last year. So sila iyong mga medalists ng Batang Pinoy, Bimp-Eaga Friendship Games, Para Games, and naa pa diay mga national athletes or mga nag-compete na mga national athletes na nakamedal (So these athletes and coaches delivered exemplary performances last year. They are the medalists from Batang Pinoy, Bimp-Eaga Friendship Games, and Para Games, and also include national athletes who won medals in various competitions)."
She underscored the importance of honoring those who have stood out on the national stage, saying the event reflects the city's deep appreciation for its sports community’s resilience, discipline, and determination.
The gathering is exclusive to medalists, coaches, and VVIPs, including city officials led by Mayor Sebastian Duterte and Vice Mayor Melchor Quitain, along with key partners and stakeholders from Davao’s sports venues.
Organizers promise a formal yet inspiring program filled with speeches, heartfelt moments, and a strong message of encouragement for continued excellence in sports.
Lumanas said the event is more than just an award ceremony; it is a platform to build a culture of recognition, inspiration, and support.
Her colleague, Charlemagne “Charlie” Roscios spearheads the overall athletes’ recognition program.
Lumanas confirmed that Araw ng Parangal will now become an annual tradition, reinforcing Davao’s long-term investment in sports development and its commitment to honoring athletic excellence year after year. Hannah Katrina Marissa Martinez, AdDU intern and Bea C. Magaga, Spamast intern
