DAVAO City has achieved a remarkable milestone, welcoming a total of 3.7 million tourists between 2022 and 2024, with a steady increase in arrivals each year. According to data from the City Tourism Operations Office (CTOO), more than 850,000 visitors came to the city in 2022, followed by 1.2 million in 2023, and nearly 1.8 million in 2024. This surge in tourist numbers underscores the city’s growing reputation as one of the top travel destinations in the Philippines.
The city's efforts to enhance its appeal have played a key role in attracting tourists.
Cultural and festive events such as the Araw ng Dabaw, Duaw Dabaw, Kadayawan Festival, and Pasko Fiesta have showcased the vibrant heritage and spirit of Davao City, drawing visitors from all over the world. These annual celebrations have become a magnet for both local and international tourists, offering a unique glimpse into the city's rich traditions and dynamic cultural scene.
The local government’s proactive initiatives have also contributed to the city’s rise as a leading tourism hub.
The CTOO has been instrumental in promoting the city as a prime location for Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (Mice). This push has been bolstered by ongoing efforts to attract business travelers and global conferences.
CTOO also reported that local businesses have greatly benefited from the influx of tourists, contributing to the city’s economic growth.
The city’s tourism sector continues to thrive, and the positive ripple effect can be seen in various industries, from hospitality to retail.
Currently, Davao City is planning to further elevate its tourism sector as it sets to open new eco-tourism destinations, particularly in the scenic regions of Marilog and Paquibato, which are expected to attract nature lovers and eco-tourists.
These developments align with the city’s commitment to promoting sustainable tourism, ensuring that growth does not come at the expense of the environment.
With its strategic initiatives in place and the continued rise in tourist numbers, Davao City is on track to meet its target of 2.5 million visitors for 2025.
Meanwhile, SunStar Davao reported that August 2024 marked the peak of this growth, with 190,068 visitors recorded.
This upturn is largely attributed to increased flight availability and frequency, as airlines expanded their schedules post-pandemic. Philippine Airlines, for instance, added early morning and late-night flights, while Qatar Airways increased its frequency from one to three flights per week, enhancing both domestic and international connectivity.
