

THE City Government of Davao, in partnership with the Davao Chinatown Council and the Filipino-Chinese community, welcomed the Year of the Snake with a vibrant celebration on January 28, 2025.
In his speech at Rizal Park, Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte expressed solidarity with people across the country and the world in celebrating Chinese New Year. He encouraged everyone to embrace transformation and new beginnings, reflecting the qualities of the Year of the Snake.
“But even as we welcome the year of transformation let us remember to always continue embodying the values of gratitude, family connection, kindness, handwork, and resilience in our daily lives,” Duterte said.
Cultural ties
Zhao Xiuzhen, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Davao, expressed joy in celebrating the Spring Festival with Dabawenyos and the global community. She highlighted that the long-standing collaboration between the Davao City government, the Davao Chinatown Council, and the Filipino-Chinese community has helped preserve and pass on Chinese culture, fostering greater mutual understanding.
“All of you have contributed significantly to passing the Chinese culture to fostering mutual understanding between civilizations and promoting cooperation between Davao and China,” she said. She also extended wishes of good health and happiness for the New Year.
The celebration featured dragon and lion dances, traditional rituals, and performances from Davao Chong Hua High School, Davao Christian High School, Philippine Academy of Sakya Davao, and Colegio de San Ignacio.
To enhance the festive atmosphere, the Davao City Tourism Operations Office (CTOO) decorated San Pedro Street with fortune panels and Chinese lanterns, adding a touch of tradition to the city’s Chinese New Year celebration. RGP
