THE Department of Education-Davao Region (DepEd-Davao) announced that around 500 student-athletes will represent the region in the upcoming Palarong Pambansa 2025, set to take place in Laoag, Ilocos Norte, from May 24 to June 2.
DepEd-Davao spokesperson Jenielito “Dodong” Atillo said that 556 athletes are part of the delegation, alongside 75 coaches, 21 assistant coaches, and 18 chaperones. The team is scheduled to depart for Laoag on May 17.
“Remember that we were ranked number four in the last Palarong Pambansa, and we now aim to rank number three,” Atillo shared during the Davao Peace and Security Press Corps forum held on April 23, 2025, at the Royal Mandaya Hotel.
In addition, 42 para-athletes will also represent the region in the Palaro’s para games, supported by 12 coaches and one chaperone.
Atillo noted that the number of participating athletes has slightly increased this year due to the inclusion of new sporting events. He called on the public to pray for the athletes, acknowledging the tough competition from other strong regions.
He said they raised their goal this year, noting that while last year’s target was only sixth place, the students exceeded expectations by finishing fourth.
This year’s edition of the Palarong Pambansa will feature new regular sports, including weightlifting, pencak silat, and pungko—both Southeast Asian martial arts that were previously just demonstration events in 2017. Kickboxing will also debut as an exhibition sport.
In the 2024 Palarong Pambansa, held at the Cebu City Sports Center on July 16, the Davao Region finished fourth overall, bringing home 32 gold, 25 silver, and 35 bronze medals—a marked improvement from sixth place in 2023.
DepEd-Davao Regional Director Allan Farnazo, speaking during the 2025 Davao City Athletic Association (Dcaa) Meet at Davao City National High School, reaffirmed the region’s goal to climb higher and secure a top-three finish this year. RGP
