DAVAO Light and Power Company, Inc. (Davao Light) marked a significant milestone on July 8, 2025, with the installation of its first electric pole in Tagum City, symbolizing the formal start of its operations in the area. The activity coincided with the inauguration of the company’s new 22MVA Digital Substation and Warehouse Facilities.
This development follows the implementation of Republic Act No. 12144, which took effect on April 6, 2025, officially transferring the electric franchise areas of Tagum City and the Island Garden City of Samal from the Northern Davao Electric Cooperative (Nordeco) to Davao Light.
Davao Light President and COO Engr. Enriczar T. Tia underscored the company’s commitment to improving energy service in areas that have long experienced power supply issues, saying, “With the enactment of Republic Act 12144, we are thrilled to bring the same commitment, expertise, and service to our new customers.”
He further emphasized the company’s long-term goal: “Together, we are not just bringing electricity; we are bringing a partnership for progress and sustainability, a commitment to innovation and safety, and a brighter, more empowered future for every individual we serve.”
Meanwhile, Davao del Norte Governor Edwin Jubahib welcomed the development, expressing optimism that Davao Light’s entry would spur economic growth in Davao del Norte and Davao de Oro.
He stressed that reliable electricity is crucial to development, and that years of unstable power service under Nordeco have hampered business and investment in the region.
To facilitate the transition, Davao Light and provincial officials are also working toward a two-year adjustment period aimed at ensuring seamless operations.
To recall, Nordeco clarified last June this year that the transition remains "premature," citing a pending Petition for Certiorari and Prohibition it filed before the Supreme Court.
The electric cooperative insists that it remains the sole electric distribution utility in Davao del Norte and Davao de Oro, except in Panabo City and the municipalities of Carmen, Braulio E. Dujali, and Sto. Tomas.
Nordeco also reiterated that all operational matters and consumer concerns in its franchise areas remain under its jurisdiction, with support from its member-consumer-owners (MCOs).
Meanwhile, Davao Light confirmed during the inauguration that it has already communicated with Nordeco, proposing the creation of a Joint Transition Committee to ensure a smooth handover of operations.
“We acknowledge Nordeco's right and await their feedback on the proposed creation of the Joint Transition Committee, which we believe is essential to pursue to facilitate a smooth and orderly transition, ensuring clarity, coordination, and preparedness throughout the process, even with their pending petition,” the utility provider said.
