THE 20th Davao City Council has passed a resolution commemorating the first Liberation Day tribute to two World War II veterans, held on Tuesday, May 6, 2025.

The resolution, proposed by Councilor Pilar Braga—Chairperson of the Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Arts, and Culture—serves as a reminder that freedom comes at a cost and that peace must be protected.

“To honor our past, we must remember to serve our future. We must continue telling these stories to the next generation,” she said.

She expressed hope that the youth will pass on the value of freedom, the cost of peace, and the power of unity.

Through the resolution, the council also commended the Davao Historical Society, the Veterans Federation of the Philippines, and the Veterans Federation of the Philippines Sons and Daughters Association Inc. for their role in commemorating the 80th anniversary of Davao City's liberation from Japanese occupation during World War II.

The first tribute was held on May 3, diverging from previous years when honors were given during Araw ng Kagitingan.

Wreath-laying ceremonies were held at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers in the Masonic Cemetery, the Veterans Memorial at the Ponciano Rotonda, and other key sites.

Previously, Braga authored an ordinance declaring May 3 as “Davao Liberation Day,” in line with Proclamation Order No. 653, Series of 1993, issued by former President Fidel V. Ramos. The proclamation encourages local governments to commemorate World War II liberation anniversaries across the country.

The ordinance aims to foster pride and historical awareness among Dabawenyos, especially the youth, highlighting the importance of May 3, 1945, when Davao was liberated. It also seeks to promote patriotism, peace, and love of country, inspired by the sacrifices of Filipino veterans. RGP
