TWO flood control projects along the Davao River are nearing completion.

The two projects in Barangay Mandug, in Davao City’s Second District, with a cumulative cost of P241.25 million, are funded under the 2024 Regular Infrastructure Program. The projects are undertaken by the DPWH Davao City 3rd District Engineering Office and are expected to be finished in the last quarter of 2025.

The reinforcement projects in Mandug, particularly the DDF Village and Bayanihan Street sections of Davao River, are now 94 percent and 87 percent completed, respectively.

Major works involve the installation of structural sheet piles, concrete capping, and embankment works to strengthen the riverbank’s defenses. It also includes the construction of concrete slope protection, retaining, and parapet walls to mitigate scouring and water overflow.

DPWH Regional Office 11 Director Juby B. Cordon said that the ongoing flood control rehabilitation projects in the two sections in Barangay Mandug, Davao City, are part of the ‘Build Better More’ program of the administration that aims to provide strategic and long-term solutions in strengthening river walls protecting communities and preserves ecosystems at the same time sustaining vital water resources.

In line with the administration’s directive under the Bagong Pilipinas vision of optimizing flood control systems in vulnerable areas of the country, the DPWH-11 has undertaken and completed several related projects in Davao City.

A flood control project in Calinan District was completed in December 2024. The project, with a cost of P86.84 million, strengthens the flood control defenses of that Davao River section.

And in November 2024, DPWH-Davao City’s 3rd District Engineering Office completed rehabilitation work in a vital section of the Lasang River. The project, with a budget of P49 million, helps protect communities in Lasang from river flooding. PIA DAVAO
