Davao tourists surge in 2024
DAVAO'S travel industry saw a surge in tourists in 2024, driven by increased aircraft availability and more frequent flights compared to 2023.
Davao Travel Agents Association president Gian Caguiat told SunStar Davao that despite political concerns, travel demand remains strong due to airlines expanding their schedules.
“The airlines added more flights to their daily schedules and are almost full,” Caguiat explained, noting that in 2023, airlines still limited flights due to Covid-19.
The city’s growing appeal, with its beaches, mountains, and rich culture, has prompted carriers to introduce new routes and increase flight frequencies, offering travelers more options and flexibility.
For example, Philippine Airlines (PAL) added early morning and late-night flights in 2024, benefiting the local economy and boosting demand for hotels, restaurants, and tours.
Qatar Airways also increased its frequency, from one to three flights a week, improving connectivity to international destinations.
Caguiat noted that the expansion is driven by the airline's commitment to enhancing connectivity and addressing growing demand. It also provides travelers with greater flexibility and opportunities to connect through Doha to various international destinations, boosting travel options for both business and leisure travelers.
Davao International Airport (DIA) has seen a 15 percent year-over-year increase in passenger arrivals, and the trend is expected to continue in 2025.
Airlines like Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines, and AirAsia have expanded schedules, responding to the rising demand for flights to Manila, Cebu, Singapore, and Hong Kong.
With enhanced air connectivity, Davao tourism is thriving, especially in the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (Mice) sector.
The Davao City Tourism and Investments Promotions Center (DCTIPC) reported a 15 percent increase in MICE-related arrivals in 2024, attributed to improved infrastructure and better flight connections. (DEF)
