SEVERAL transport groups once again voiced their support for the Public Transport Modernization Program (PTMP) during an event at SM City Davao on Monday, March 24, 2025.
Jean Bangay of the Kapatagan Transport Cooperative emphasized that service entities from Davao del Sur and Davao Occidental fully back the PTMP and the national goal of improving the transport system.
“The program has provided significant financial incentives to our drivers, auxiliary workers, and members, ensuring a more stable and sustainable livelihood,” Bangay said.
With better income, working conditions, and access to government benefits, transport workers now have the means to support their families and uplift their communities.
The North Davao Transport Cooperative Federation (NDTCF) also reaffirmed its commitment to the PTMP, citing the visible improvements it has brought. The group expressed its support for the ongoing consolidation of cooperatives in the region.
“As transport cooperatives, we remain dedicated to advancing the government’s goal of a modern, well-structured, safe, and accessible public transport system that benefits the entire riding public,” NDTCF said in a statement.
By 2024, the consolidation of transport services in the Davao Region had made significant strides, with 88 percent of routes already integrated into the modernization program. Of the 53 designated bus routes, 51 had been consolidated, along with 51 out of 63 jeepney routes and 20 out of 22 UV Express routes.
The progress extended to vehicle units as well, with 92 percent now operating under the new system. A total of 823 out of 846 buses, 639 out of 750 jeepneys, and 548 out of 597 UV Express units had transitioned, reflecting the widespread adoption of the initiative.
The shift was also evident among transport cooperatives, with 33 entities officially consolidated across the region. Eleven of these came from Davao del Sur and Davao Occidental, while the remaining 22 represented Davao del Norte, Davao de Oro, and Davao Oriental.
Launched under the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte, the Public Transport Modernization Program (PTMP) aims to replace traditional jeepneys with modern, environmentally friendly vehicles while ensuring commuter safety remains a top priority. Under the program, public utility vehicles (PUVs) are required to operate under cooperatives for the renewal of their provisional authorities, reinforcing a structured and sustainable transport system.
