BEMEDALED Davao City swimmer Paolo Miguel Lim Labanon, 18, is set to join the Ateneo de Manila University (AdMU) swimming varsity team, marking a new chapter in his athletic and academic journey while proudly carrying the spirit of his hometown.
Labanon, a long-distance freestyle and butterfly specialist, said he will move to Manila permanently but plans to remain in Davao for a while to complete his training preparations. He usually competes in 1500m, 800m, 400m, and 200m freestyle and 200m butterfly events. He also joins open water swimming competitions.
“My goal at Ateneo is to give my best both as a student and an athlete. I want to represent the school well while staying focused on my studies,” the 18-year-old said.
Labanon, who finished senior high at Mapua Malayan Colleges Mindanao (MMCM), recently received recognition at the Araw ng Parangal at Pasasalamat in Davao City, where he stood alongside fellow athletes honored for their achievements. He said the award fueled his drive and reminded him of the strong support he continues to receive from the Dabawenyos.
"It was a special moment for me. I felt proud to be recognized alongside fellow Davao athletes. It gave me a sense of fulfillment and motivated me to train harder to bring more honor to our city,” he said.
Although he’s preparing to represent Ateneo in national collegiate meets, Labanon said he remains willing to swim for Davao. “Davao is where I started. It’s always been an honor to represent my city. If I’m invited again, I’d say yes,” he said.
Beyond his swimming achievements, Lebanon’s journey reflects his deep connection to his roots and his determination to balance sports and studies. He plans to continue rigorous training for major competitions while taking up his college courses at Ateneo.

Labanon began swimming at a young age and steadily rose through local and national ranks, overcoming early morning workouts and academic pressure with the help of his coaches and family. He now balances his ambition with a clear focus on discipline and consistency. Rovie Ann Remolleno, Davao del Sur State College Intern
