MATI CITY — In a groundbreaking move to improve peace and order in remote areas, the Police Regional Office-Davao Region (PRO-Davao), in collaboration with the Davao Oriental Police Provincial Office (DOPPO), officially launched the region’s first-ever “Cavaliers” Horseback Riding Patrol on April 29, 2025, at Menzi Beach Park, Dahican.

According to a press release, the initiative is designed to bolster police presence and operational capacity in rural and mountainous areas, using horses as reliable partners for law enforcement.

The mounted patrol is expected to enhance visibility, deter criminal activity, and foster stronger ties with isolated communities, while also supporting tourism and environmental conservation efforts.

The launch marks the culmination of a rigorous 10-day, 80-hour Horseback Riding Patrol Training, held from April 4 to 14, in line with the Philippine National Police (PNP) Memorandum Circular No. 2014-046 on in-service training standards.

According to the report, a total of 31 police personnel from stations across Davao del Norte, Davao de Oro, Davao City, and Mati underwent specialized horsemanship training, which included basic and advanced riding skills, obstacle navigation, formation riding, dismount procedures, and desensitization exercises.

During the program’s closing ceremony, the officers showcased their newly acquired skills in a dynamic field demonstration, highlighting the discipline, teamwork, and dedication developed throughout the training.

Governor Niño Uy lauded the initiative, emphasizing the importance of sustained cooperation between local governments, law enforcement agencies, and communities.

Uy also noted that his administration has intensified security monitoring across Davao Oriental through close coordination with police forces and disaster response units, ensuring that his constituents remain safe and resilient in the face of emerging challenges.

The provincial government said the “Cavaliers” Horseback Riding Patrol reflects the Philippine National Police’s evolving strategies in community-based policing and rural outreach.

DOPPO said they are hoping to inspire similar initiatives in other provinces. RGL
