DAVAO City Police Office (DCPO) Acting Director PCol. Hansel Marantan has formally asked to be relieved from his post due to serious health concerns.
During the Sangguniang Panlungsod session on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, Marantan confirmed he filed his relief request on June 13 and is awaiting a response within 15 days. In the meantime, he has gone on leave.
“I am in pain, I have medical conditions, so I have to address them. I have 52 metal screws in my body, I have a total knee replacement, I have a titanium spine in other words I am a PWD,” he said in a media interview on Tuesday, June 17, 2025, at the Sangguniang Panlungsod.
He said that stepping down doesn’t mean he wants to leave Davao City or seek a promotion. “I just need to rest,” he said.
In his exit call to the 20th City Council, Marantan reported that DCPO solved all 760 focus crimes committed from July 10, 2024, to June 13, 2025. These include 359 theft cases, 160 rape, 105 physical injuries, 76 robberies, 27 murders, 24 carnapping, seven homicide, and one carjacking.
All suspects were either arrested, charged, or neutralized, according to Marantan. He also noted zero incidents of election-related violence or terrorist attacks under his leadership.
In recognition of his contributions, City Councilor Conrado Baluran filed a resolution commending Marantan’s service. The council approved the motion.
Marantan, who was appointed on July 10, 2024, is the fifth DCPO director since March 2024. His assignment followed a chaotic period of rapid leadership turnover. On the day of his appointment alone, three colonels were cycled through the DCPO post in a matter of hours. PCol. Lito Patay was first installed, then removed after a command conference. PCol. Sherwin Butil took over but was relieved three hours later. Marantan, from the National Capital Region, was then designated by PNP Chief Gen. Rommel Marbil.
The DCPO also underwent sweeping personnel changes. On May 22, 2024, 35 officers — including then-chief Col. Richard Bad-ang — were dismissed under orders from Police Brig. Gen. Aligre Martinez.
Earlier, on July 24, 2024, Councilor Luna Acosta reported receiving petitions from residents urging the reinstatement of 19 police station commanders removed on July 8.
Marantan said he recommended three possible successors but declined to name them. An acting city director will be appointed while he awaits feedback from national police officials. He also plans to formally inform Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte of his departure in person. RGP
