THE Davao City Police Office (DCPO) recorded 40 road accidents, resulting in at least seven fatalities, from January 1 to 5, 2025.
DCPO spokesperson Captain Hazel Tuazon shared the data on January 8, 2025, during the Davao Peace and Security Press Corps, attributing most incidents to human errors such as overspeeding, inattentiveness, and improper lookout. Drunk driving and drowsy driving were also common contributing factors.
A notable incident occurred on January 4 in Toril, where a commuter van collided with another van, killing four passengers and severely injuring two others.
Authorities found that the van, driven by Kadaffy Salik of Cotabato City, lost control and veered into the opposite lane. Salik is facing charges of reckless imprudence resulting in homicide, property damage, and physical injuries.
Days later, another crash occurred in Toril, claiming the life of a 62-year-old passenger after a tricycle collided with a stray dog along Purok 8 Bato Toril Road. The tricycle, driven by Crispin C. Liatan, swerved after hitting the dog and crashed into metal railings.
Captain Tuazon urged drivers to remain attentive to prevent accidents and ensure road safety. She also warned that drivers found at fault may face fines, penalties, or criminal charges. DEF
