AROUND 25,000 fingerlings were distributed to 20 backyard fish farmers in the Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) on February 28, 2025.

The distribution included 15 bags of 1,000 fingerlings each and 20 bags of 500 fingerlings each.

Rosalindo Marquez, a backyard fish farmer for six years, expressed gratitude for the government’s support.

“Dako jud siyag tabang sa amuang kanang panginabuhi kay usahay kung walay sud’an adto mi didto manguha, mamaligya pud mi. Dako mig pasalama sa gobyerno kay natagaan mi niyag isda (This helps a lot with our livelihood. When we have no food, we can harvest and even sell some fish. We’re very thankful to the government),” she said.

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources-Davao Region (Bfar-Davao), in coordination with the City Agriculture’s Office, provided the fingerlings. Before the distribution, the fishery division inspected ponds to allocate fingerlings based on size.

Earlier, on February 14, 2025, Bfar-Davao also distributed 722,060 fingerlings (tilapia, catfish, and bangus), 9,286 bags of feeds, and six freshwater fish cages across Davao de Oro as part of a rehabilitation program for fisherfolk affected by the 2024 low-pressure area.

Bfar-Davao regional director Relly B. Garcia assured continued support to strengthen and develop the fisheries sector. RGP
