SOME parts of Mindanao, particularly the Davao Region, may experience moderate to heavy rains due to the ongoing surge of Easterlies.
In its weather forecast on Wednesday, January 15 valid until Thursday, January 16, 2025, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said that several portions in Eastern Visayas, Caraga, Davao Region, and Soccsksargen may experience possible flash floods or landslides due to moderate to at times heavy rains, further reminding residents in these areas to prepare themselves for emergencies.
The state weather bureau also warned that the Northeast Monsoon locally known as “Amihan” may bring rains to parts of Luzon while the rest of the country can expect partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms, also caused by the Easterlies.
In Davao City, several barangays on January 15 have shifted to blended learning and suspended their face-to-face classes from basic education to college level due to the weather disturbance.
Meanwhile, there was also a minor landslide in Mawab, Davao de Oro. The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office-Mawab (MDRRMO-Mawab) advised all motorists traversing Purok 16, National Highway in Brgy. Poblacion to drive with extra caution due to the movement of earth materials.
On the other hand, the provincial government units (PLGU) of Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, Davao Oriental, and cities such as Island Garden City of Samal (Igacos) and Panabo City have all suspended classes at all levels following the prevailing weather conditions in their areas of responsibility (AOR).
Earlier this week, Pagasa said that three weather systems are set to bring varying levels of rainfall across the country with one possible tropical cyclone (TC) to form inside the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) in January.
The cyclone may make landfall near Eastern Visayas or the Caraga Region. DEF
