THE Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMinCom) paid a solemn tribute to the brave Filipino soldiers who fought in the historic battles of Bataan and Corregidor during World War II, marking Araw ng Kagitingan on Wednesday, April 9, 2025.
In its official statement, EastMinCom highlighted the enduring legacy of these fallen heroes, emphasizing the continued significance of their sacrifices in today’s defense of national sovereignty. The command stated that the "steadfast spirit and selfless sacrifices" of these heroes "remain a powerful beacon, guiding our unwavering dedication to safeguarding our nation."
EastMinCom also urged Filipinos to stay united in preserving the spirit of patriotism, saying, “As we honor their memory, let us remain united in bearing the flame of patriotism—drawing strength from their valor as we strive to uphold the freedom they so valiantly fought for.”
The tribute concluded with a call to remember the heroes: “Mabuhay ang ating mga Bayani (Long live our heroes)!”
Meanwhile, the 10th Infantry Division (10ID) of the Philippine Army also commemorated the Day of Valor, recognizing the heroism of the Bataan and Corregidor defenders.
“The men and women of the 10th Infantry ‘Agila’ Division, Philippine Army, proudly honor the courage, dedication, and sacrifices of our soldiers in the pursuit of peace and development,” the division stated. They closed with a patriotic salute: “Maligayang Araw ng Kagitingan! Mabuhay ang Pilipinas!”
In Davao City, Vice Mayor Melchor Quitain led the city’s 83rd Araw ng Kagitingan commemoration at the Veteran’s Memorial Monument. In his message, Quitain honored the bravery of Filipino soldiers during World War II, urging reflection and patriotism.
"Reflect on the sacrifices made by our heroes, many of whom endured hardships beyond imagination not for personal gain but for the liberty and peace we now enjoy," he said.
He called on Filipinos to draw inspiration from the 1942 defenders, remain vigilant, and work together to build a strong, united nation.
Former police official Isidro S. Lapeña also spoke at the event, warning about modern battles against corruption and disinformation. He criticized the arrest of former President Rodrigo Duterte, saying, “Let us also not allow current controversies from remembering the contribution of President Duterte during his time in office, particularly his aggressive campaign against illegal drugs."
President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. and Vice President Sara Duterte also led separate commemorations, honoring the fallen members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Philippine National Police (PNP).
“Ipagdiwang natin ang kanilang alaala sa pamamagitan ng pagtatag ng isang bansang kailanma’y hindi na muling daranas ng gayong pagdurusa,” the Vice President said. DEF
