EGG prices in Davao City have slightly dropped to P8.75 per piece as of March 31, 2025, down P0.45 from P9.20 over the past two weeks.
However, prices may still vary depending on the vendor or market. Despite this decline, consumers remain concerned, especially as pork prices continue to rise.
At the Bankerohan Public Market, vendor Edward Lamoste said that while egg prices have gone up, the adjustment is minimal and necessary to cover costs.
“We had to raise the price a little, just enough to make up for the losses and maintain our profit margins,” Lamoste said during the interview.
Lamoste also noted that most of their egg supply comes from poultry farms in General Santos City.
The Department of Agriculture (DA) has assured the public that it is closely monitoring egg prices to prevent unreasonable increases.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. attributed the price hike to higher demand—partly due to election-related spending—and increased chicken mortality caused by extreme heat.
Laurel noted that some have proposed setting a maximum suggested retail price (MSRP) for eggs, similar to price controls on rice and pork. However, he emphasized that the DA will first consult stakeholders to ensure market stability and avoid unintended consequences for the industry.
He also reaffirmed the DA’s commitment to monitoring and stabilizing prices.
“While there have been calls to impose an MSRP on eggs, as with other goods, we have to consult stakeholders first so as not to shock the industry,” Laurel added.
Meanwhile, the DA is also considering price caps on other goods, including garlic. However, discussions have been temporarily put on hold after garlic prices dropped from P160 to around P100 per kilo. Given this decline, the department decided to delay any price control measures for now.
“Since the price has fallen to around P100 a kilo, we had to hold back. I think the current price is reasonable given their cost of around P80,” he said. “But if prices spike again, we will definitely implement an MSRP.” DEF
