A DAVAO City-based environmental group is launching a "green vote" campaign ahead of the 2025 midterm elections, aiming to raise public awareness about voting for environmentally-conscious candidates.

Lemuel Manalo, program coordinator for the Interfacing Development Interventions for Sustainability (Idis), explained that the campaign will highlight responsible candidates prioritizing environmental protection. He underscored the importance of voters choosing candidates who support sustainable practices.

“We call it the green vote, diha namo ginagawas ang responsible candidates na naa silay statements on environmental protection tapos we made people aware ug si kinsa pod ang ilang ibuto naay mga decision and stake for environment protection (We call it the green vote, where we highlight responsible candidates who have statements on environmental protection. We make people aware of who they are voting for, and whether those candidates have decisions and stakes in environmental protection),” he said in a media interview on Tuesday morning, January 22, 2025, at the Sangguniang Panlungsod.

The green vote initiative also addresses election management, focusing on the responsible placement of campaign materials. Manalo reminded candidates and supporters not to put campaign paraphernalia on trees, following an Executive Order from former Mayor Sara Duterte that bans the irresponsible installation of materials.

Idis is lobbying for Davao City Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte to reinforce this rule.

The group also advocates for sustainable disposal of campaign materials, encouraging candidates to use eco-friendly alternatives instead of PVC tarpaulins, which can pose health risks due to toxic fumes.

Manalo stressed the need for environmentally conscious decisions even during election season, calling for the use of eco-friendly materials and social media engagement.

Commission on Elections (Comelec) Davao Region Assistant Regional Director, Lawyer Gay Enumerables, clarified that no premature campaigning is allowed at this stage, as the election is automated. Official campaigning will begin with the designated campaign period.

She also reminded candidates about the proper size and placement of campaign materials, which must adhere to the 2x3 feet limit in designated areas.

The campaign period for national candidates starts on February 11, while local candidates can begin campaigning on March 28. Both campaigns will end on May 10. RGP
