Dear Dr. Fritz,
Good day! Call me DG Igs. I had a talk with my friend and she told me that drinking warm water reduces blood sugar. How true is this? I am concerned and wanted to know because I am diabetic.
I am waiting for your response. God bless.

Dear DG Igs,
I understand your concern. Well, here’s the truth. Drinking warm water after meals may aid in your digestion, and this can potentially help regulate blood sugar levels by promoting insulin sensitivity. But, the bottom line is, drinking warm water alone does not help reduce blood sugar level.
It is necessary that you also combine this habit with a balanced diet, regular exercise, and proper diabetes management techniques for maximum blood sugar control.
On the other side of the story, drinking cold water or refrigerated water at or around 4 degrees Celsius can help reduce blood sugar levels. Our body temperature is 37 degrees Celsius. So, if you drink cold water, this will be heated up by the stomach to reach your body temperature by burning calories.
Studies have shown that 45 calories are burnt per day by just drinking cold water, which translates into 10 mg/deci liter of blood sugar.
Anyway, here are some more tips for you to control your blood sugar:
1. Get some eggs or vegetables as your first few bites in your meal, or at least 100 grams of them. This can help reduce the spike in blood sugar after the meals.
2. If you get those hunger pangs, take veggies or lettuce, for instance, instead of carbs
and drink your cold water.
I hope this helps. Good luck!
Dr. Fritz
