FOR more than a decade, mainland China has been portrayed as the demon, the land grabber, the antagonist waiting to claim the Philippines.
It’s amusing how even intellectuals repeat this narrative: China is the villain.
I have visited China twice, exploring cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, Ningbo, and Chongqing. I don’t believe they are concerned about our issues; they are busy with their own lives. I wouldn’t dare involve myself in the politics of this vast country. All I can say is that the truth differs from what we currently read.
Born in the 1960s, I proudly identify as a senior citizen. Growing up during that time allowed me to witness how narratives of hatred are perpetuated from generation to generation.
On television and in movies, we learned that villains were often depicted as Japanese or Germans — specifically their soldiers and officers. They were always portrayed as traitors and schemers during my early school years. Then, at some point in my youth, these antagonists faded away, making room for Russians to take their place. Almost invariably, when a Russian character appeared on screen — a spy or officer — the music would shift to something menacing while they plotted against the protagonist.
Now… the focus has shifted to the Chinese. Anyone who says anything good about China is the enemy.
In retrospect, those we are led to believe are antagonists align with current enemies of the West. Unfortunately, Philippine media — still influenced by its “Little Brown Brother” mentality — continues to propagate this narrative without realizing it contributes to an ingrained program of hatred.
I am sure there will be other narratives for future generations to absorb. But as long as China looms large on the horizon, the West will not cease feeding this agenda.
Meanwhile, people in China go about their daily lives; small manufacturers are emerging alongside larger ones. While many significant manufacturers still exist — everything in China tends toward scale — these smaller enterprises contribute significantly to the global economy while the West invests in war and creating enemies.
As for the Philippines? The prevailing narrative continues to be embraced and assimilated. One only needs to observe and listen to our news coverage to discern this reality.
May we be blessed with Divine inspiration to see through the lies and claim our own purpose to work for our people and our country instead of gleefully tearing down anyone who dares to speak against the current program of whom to hate.
