61st Hijos de Davao

Heritage and history in a ball
Published on

There’s no other night quite like it in Davao. Last June 29, 2025, the Dusit Thani Ballroom 1 sparkled as Davaoeños came together for the 61st Hijos de Davao Ball — an annual tradition that proves history and heritage can be celebrated in full formal fashion (with a little sparkle and a lot of Filipiniana flair).

For those new to the city or wondering what all the buzz is about, the Hijos de Davao Ball isn’t just a reason to dress up — though, let’s be honest, that’s a fun part of it. It’s Davao’s most enduring social event, a tradition that’s been around for over six decades, honoring the families who chose to plant their roots here and helped shape the city we love today.

This year’s muse, Ayisha Madlen T. Lagdameo, daughter of Anton and Dawn Lagdameo, gracefully carried the torch of tradition, accompanied by her escort, Seve Diago, son of Rene and Claudine Diago. With youthful elegance, they represented not just their families, but the next generation of Davaoeños ready to continue the legacy.

Of course, no Hijos Ball would be complete without the Rigodon de Honor, the grand and graceful dance that brings the evening to life — a formal waltz that reminds us we’re part of something timeless. And speaking of timeless, Davao’s very own designer Bobby Castillo showcased his stunning Filipiniana collection, blending classic elegance with modern Dabawenyo pride.

But beyond the gowns, tuxedos, and photo ops, the Hijos de Davao remains deeply rooted in purpose. This elegant affair raises funds for worthy causes like the Fenixia Foundation and the Philippine Mental Health Association (PMHA) Davao, reminding everyone that giving back never goes out of style.

As I watched the different generations mingle — proud grandparents, stylish parents, and the next wave of Davaoeño youth — one thing became clear: this isn’t just a ball, it’s a love letter to Davao. A reminder that while we move forward, we never forget where we came from.

Here’s to many more decades of heritage, history, and of course, a little bit of ballroom sparkle.
