Balay Pasilungan marks 36 years of shelter and transformation
Balay Pasilungan, a long-standing refuge for street and at-risk children in Davao City, celebrates its 36th Foundation Anniversary, a milestone that reflects its enduring mission of healing, transformation, and hope.
Established on May 4, 1989, the Foundation of Balay Pasilungan, Inc. was created in response to the growing number of children facing abandonment, neglect, and exploitation. Over the years, it has evolved from a modest drop-in center into a comprehensive care institution, offering residential and transitional care, psychosocial services, education, and strong community engagement.
"Thirty-six years of Balay Pasilungan is a profound reminder that love, when consistent and courageous, changes lives," Executive Director of Balay Pasilungan Fr. Gil Casio said. "It means 36 years of saying ‘you are not forgotten’ to children who have lived through abandonment, abuse, or neglect. This anniversary is not just about looking back, it is about recommitting ourselves to a future where every child finds safety, dignity, and hope."
At the heart of this year’s celebration is the Tree of Hope, a creative and living symbol reflecting the foundation’s mission and the 10th anniversary of Laudato Si’, Pope Francis’ encyclical on care for creation and the most vulnerable.
"The Tree of Hope is our living prayer," Casio said. "I hope the boys learn that, like trees, they can rise from broken soil — that they can grow strong roots, stretch toward light, and bear fruit. I also hope the community is reminded that hope must be planted, nurtured, and shared."
Among the many touching moments throughout the years, Casio recalled one that continues to resonate deeply.
‘"One unforgettable moment was during a quiet afternoon when a boy asked if he could plant his Tree of Hope in memory of his father." The boy said, ‘Para ni sa akong Papa nga wa na (This is for my father who is no longer here).’ That tree became his way of saying, ‘I want to grow too,’" Casio said. "That simple act — planting a tree — became sacred. It showed how even wounded children long to nurture life."
Now in its 36th year, Balay Pasilungan continues to expand its services while staying grounded in its mission.
"We’ve grown in professional services — psychosocial support, transitional programs, spiritual care, and partnerships," Casio said. "But what has stayed the same is the spirit of welcome. Since day one, Balay Pasilungan has remained true to its name — a house of refuge where children are embraced with tenderness and guided with hope."
As the foundation marks this milestone, it sends a message beyond the walls of its shelter.
"This celebration is not just ours — it’s a call to all," Casio said. "Let us choose to grow — not just trees, but a society that restores dignity, nurtures hope, and believes in the potential of every child."
