As the demand for digital solutions grows across industries, innovations are also now reaching regional areas in the Philippines, unlocking new economic opportunities. Driving this further is Tech Week PH, PLDT Enterprise’s first multi-city technology event, held at the Acacia Hotel in Davao City.

Tech Week PH highlighted digital solutions aimed at bridging the technology gap between urban and regional areas, with Mindanao being the first stop of the event.

Brought to the country by PLDT Enterprise, Tech Week PH has been a key platform for highlighting advances in AI, smart tech, and connectivity. This year, the focus is on expanding these opportunities beyond Metro Manila, offering valuable insights into how AI-driven infrastructure and advanced connectivity can help businesses and communities in Mindanao and other provinces.

Mitch Locsin, First Vice President and Head of Enterprise Core Business at PLDT and Smart, led Tech Week PH 2025 in Davao, highlighting that with the introduction of AI-powered submarine links, PLDT is leading efforts to connect regional hubs like Mindanao to global markets, delivering faster, more reliable internet and enhanced data utilization for businesses.

“This improved connectivity supports growth in sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and business services, helping Mindanao’s businesses tap into new opportunities and compete globally. This initiative will provide Mindanao with better connectivity and faster speeds, connecting the region to the world through the first AI-powered optical transport submarine cable,” Locsin added.

Locsin added that the initiative will improve data speed and utilization, offering better access to social media platforms, managed services, and business opportunities. It will also connect Mindanao to data centers not only within the region but also in Luzon.

Recognizing that stakeholders must have the skills and knowledge to harness technology’s power, Locsin also emphasized during his speech that education is a crucial foundation for Mindanao’s digital future. In partnership with schools and corporate social responsibility programs, PLDT aims to train students in key tech skills, such as understanding data centers, connectivity infrastructure, and AI utilization.

Victor Genuino, President and CEO of ePLDT and VITRO Inc. – PLDT’s ICT subsidiary and data center operator, respectively – highlighted the Group’s commitment to driving Mindanao’s digital transformation through innovation, education, and skills development. He emphasized that PLDT’s efforts in the region go far beyond infrastructure development since they also focus on empowering people and communities with the tools and knowledge needed to embrace emerging technologies.

“Mindanao’s future lies in a digitally skilled workforce. We are investing in education and training to ensure that local talent can fully participate in the region’s digital economy,” Genuino said.

Tech Week PH put the spotlight on how technology is revolutionizing key sectors such as agriculture and tourism. Citing AI as an example, Genuino explained that it can be a powerful tool for agricultural innovation. When integrated with cloud-based solutions, AI can significantly improve crop monitoring, optimize irrigation management, and promote sustainable practices—helping farmers adapt to climate challenges and tap into broader markets.

In the tourism sector, smart technologies are enhancing customer experience and optimizing infrastructure management. “Digital platforms are helping cities like Davao attract more visitors, while local businesses are using tech to serve customers better, predict tourism trends, and strengthen their cybersecurity resilience,” Genuino added.

PLDT’s approach includes forging strong partnerships with local governments, business owners, and educational institutions. Tech Week PH highlights the vital role of collaboration between PLDT and regional stakeholders in making technology more inclusive. These partnerships are essential to building a strong digital foundation and ensuring long-term, sustainable digital growth in Mindanao.

Through AI-driven infrastructure, improved connectivity, and educational initiatives, PLDT Enterprise is opening doors to a future where every Filipino, regardless of location, can access the opportunities provided by digital technologies. AJA
