Culture took center stage as the candidates for Hiyas sa Kadayawan 2025 celebrated Davao City’s indigenous heritage in a vibrant showcase.
Colors, rhythm, and tradition filled the venue as 11 candidates presented the rich heritage of the city’s 11 ethnolinguistic tribes. More than a beauty pageant, Hiyas sa Kadayawan is a cultural search that began in the 1980s to highlight the role of young women as keepers and storytellers of their community’s traditions.
Each candidate wore traditional attire, performed her tribe’s dances, and shared stories rooted in her community’s history—told through distinct storytelling practices such as chants, epics, ceremonial movements, and symbolic props.
Supporters from their respective tribes came in full force, filling the venue with cheers and tribal pride.
This year’s top three cultural performances, in no particular order, came from Hiyas sa Ata Jovie Otahi, Hiyas sa Maguindanaon Sittie Hasmine Sultan, and Hiyas sa Maranao Sittie Norhanna Sangcaan.
The coronation night for Hiyas sa Kadayawan 2025 is set for Thursday, August 14—a celebration of beauty, talent, and pride that reflects how the Kadayawan spirit remains deeply rooted in tradition.
