Know the 11 tribes at the Kadayawan Village

Every Kadayawan sa Dabaw, the 11 ethnolinguistic tribes of Davao City showcase their tribal houses at Magsaysay Park.

These houses were built uniquely and a place where we can discover their different textiles, clothing, tribal delicacies, and their way of living.

Here is some must-see inside their tribal houses at the Kadayawan Tribal Village:

Bagobo Klata

Compared to the house that was built here several years ago, they added a typical Bagobo-Klata’s kitchen and storage room. Inside you can also see some of their things that were translated from English to Tagalog to the Klata language.

Ata

The Ata call the house they have constructed inside the tribal village as Binanwa. This is an exact replica of the houses you can find in the Paquibato District in Davao City. Here you can see how authentic and simple their daily living is, especially livelihood products that made them survive every day.

Obo Manuvu

Here you can see the setup of their Datu’s beddings. Aside from that you can also rent and wear their traditional clothing while taking pictures inside their house. You can also play their traditional instruments like the agong and kulintangan.

Matigsalug

One of the unique features of their house is how they designed their small windows. It was designed this way because the tribe uses the window to “ngilam” or to alert themselves to a “Mangayaw” or person seeking justice. You can also see their weaved bags and some of their indigenous fruits.

Bagobo-Tagabawa

Fun fact this is the tribe that Vice President Sara Duterte represented during the last State of the Nation Address when she wore the traditional clothes of this tribe. The traditional clothes that Duterte wore are displayed on the balcony of their house. When you visit here, you can also try a cup of their tribal coffee for free.

Tausug

The main highlight inside their tribal house is the Sultan’s Chair. You can take pictures sitting on it while you wear their Batawi, Sablay, and Laphi which are their tribal clothes. On other days, you can also try their delicacies like their famous black soup called “Tiyula itum.”

Sama

The tribe is known as the people who live peacefully at sea. One of the new things you can see within their house is the “Lepa.” It’s a type of traditional boat used by Sama tribe during festivals and weddings. The Lepa displayed in their house was given by Vice President Duterte when she was still a mayor. The Lepa she gave was a gift from the people of Tawi-Tawi during their Lepa Festival in 2019.

Marano

Of all the tribal houses, their house is filled with antique furniture. You can also find a big weapon known as “kampilan,” a traditional maranao creeper of Sultans and Datus that was passed on from one generation to another. On the second floor, you will see the setup of the beddings of a sultan’s daughter or princess of the tribe.

Maguindanaon

Here you can see the typical beddings of a newlywed Maguindanaon. The interior of the house is decorated with how they design houses for every gathering, feast, and especially a wedding. One of the unique features of the house is the intricate design of their “Likos,” a Maguindanaon women’s cloth intricately made with different colors and designs, it is commonly designed with different types of beads.

Iranun

Inside their house, you can have a close look at their “Iroan,” a traditional weaving machine that is commonly used by Iranun in creating their fabric textile called “Inaol.” Aside from that, they have also displayed their version of “Kampilan” a traditional weapon used by sultans and datu of the tribe.

Kagan

The tribe showcases the replica of a traditional house of a royal family made of lauan, coco lumber, nipa, and bamboo. The exterior houses have icons and patterns carved by burning a portion of the wood, symbolizing royalty. JRO
