A TOTAL of 39 Mindanao artists take centerstage in a National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA)-led art exhibit starting April 25 until May 9, 2023 at the La Herencia Davao in Davao City.

Dubbed as “Pakighinabi: Mindanao Exhibition of Bagong Biswal,” NCCA-National Committee on Visual Arts (NCVA) Secretary Kaye O’yek said, during Tuesday’s PepTalks Lifestyle Forum at SM Lanang Premier, that they are excited to mount their first face-to-face exhibit in the city since the pandemic.

“For the past years, the NCCA has been handling online exhibitions. But, for the first time, we are now organizing face to face digital shows with our artists, so that everyone can have camaraderie, meet each other all over again after lockdown,” she said.

O’yek said the featured artworks are made by artists from Mindanao.

“This is a Mindanao-wide work of art, we have as far as Zamboanga, Dapitan, Bukidnon, Cagayan de Oro and of course, we have a lot of Davao artists representing, so it is a worthy exhibition to present,” O’yek said.

O’yek said the artworks would feature various art media, including oil, various pigments of soil, and wood assemblage - which is added with objects such as metals, xylophones, acrylic in canvas, terracotta and clay and live installations using bamboo, and even mixed media.

O’yek added that this exhibit shows different modes of expression and artworks that could serve as an opportunity for young visual artists to develop their potential.

The artworks are currently available and open to the public starting April 25 until May 9 in La Herencia Davao.

Aside from the ‘Pakighinabi’, the “Komiks: Sining Biswal” will also exhibit 100 years of Filipino comics in La Herencia Davao on April 28 to May 14, a manager from La Herencia Davao said.

“We will be conducting our Art Talk Series in La Herencia. These are free art talk series about art curation and art writing, so if there are people who like to write about art, we will have free workshops for three days at La Herencia,” Rob Tañedo, La Herencia Davao Manager said.

Two types of workshops will be conducted from May 1-14, namely, Fundamentals of Drawing Comics Illustrations, and the “HAGOD” , a workshop on the tradition of brush illustrations by Filipino comic masters that focuses on the Filipino way of inking which will be curated by Randy Valiente.

“Although this workshop will require a fee of P500 pesos, the participants will be provided free materials and could also bring their artworks with them, in addition, La Herencia will give them a chance to fund their self published comic book from this workshop,” Tañedo added.

Tañedo emphasized that the comics workshop is a way of reviving the actual works of Filipino comic creators from 100 years up to the present.
