WITH colourful fireworks and world-class performances by Cebuanos, the Philippines National Games opening act deserves two thumbs up. But more than the dances, the lights, and the music, it is the hardworking athletes who most deserve our respect and praise.
During the seven-day national games organized by the Philippine Sports Commission held in the different places in Cebu province, around 70 local government units participated in the games with over 1,700 medals and a thousand reasons to watch the next edition of the national games.
Pride and determination is all one can see among the athletes as they represent their different cities and municipalities or even the national team while playing. It’s a win or go home mentality for these athletes because winning gold means a ticket to the national team.
As a lens man from Davao, I was assigned to follow the games of the athletes representing the city. It’s an ice and coffee feeling for me as I slip my eyes through the viewfinder while watching the games especially the contact sports like Karatedo, Taekwondo, and Arnis.
What moved me the most were the tears of Diane Mae Memoracion and Rexor Tacay, both representing Davao City. Memoracion who ran senior women's 800-meter run broke down in tears after finishing the race and winning the gold. She said she prayed to God for gold as her birthday gift for her coach.
Karatedo National team member Rexor Tacay, suffered a knee injury during a match with Jude Micheal Uson from Dagupan City, despite this Rexor managed to pull off a win but was not able to fight after a huddle with his brother and the medical team.
Still, he is ensured of a slot in the national team. Tears we’re all over the place after the announcement, but before the unfortunate decision, Rexor displayed a true heart of a champion by standing up and fighting the pain on his knee.
These were just two of the many athletes who gave their all for the gold medal, stories of inspiration and bravery in the name of sports.
At the end, Cebu City topped with 48 golds, 70 silvers, and 79 bronze. They were followed by Baguio City and Mandaluyong City, while Davao City notched the fourth spot with 19 golds, 30 silvers, and 43 bronze.
