In celebration of World Sleep Month 2025, Uratex hosted an event at SM City Davao Ecoland, drawing in health professionals, design experts, and members of the local community to discuss the importance of quality sleep and how bedroom environments can support it.

Held in collaboration with SM Home, the event featured a special “CHITchat” session led by Davao-based content creator Chito Samontina. The panel included Dr. Duane Salud, President of the Philippine Society of Otolaryngology Southern Mindanao Chapter; and interior designers IDr. Jennifer Serrano and IDr. Ian Manglicmot from the Philippine Institute of Interior Designers. The discussion covered key issues affecting sleep and practical solutions people can apply at home.

Dr. Salud emphasized the growing problem of sleep deprivation among Filipinos. He cited data showing that more than half of the population sleeps less than seven hours each night, often due to work demands and shifting lifestyles. He also noted sleep apnea and insomnia as increasingly common concerns among patients.

“Almost 56% of the population sa Pilipinas, bata man o tigulang, kulang gyud ilang tulog, less than 7 hours,” said Dr. Salud.

He reminded the audience that while seven to eight hours of sleep is ideal, sleep quality is just as important. Good sleep involves progressing through proper stages of rest, not just clocking hours in bed.

IDr. Serrano focused on the psychological and environmental aspects of a restful bedroom. She highlighted how thoughtful design choices, like color palettes, lighting, and material textures, can significantly affect mood and relaxation. According to her, soft blues, greens, and neutral tones are especially helpful for creating a calming atmosphere.

“A well-designed bedroom really contributes to a restful, calming atmosphere and gives better sleep,” said IDr. Serrano.

She also emphasized the role of technical aspects and personal touches in enhancing comfort, from furniture placement to lighting temperature.

Meanwhile, IDr. Ian Manglicmot discussed how spatial planning and functionality can either support or disrupt sleep. He advised that beds should not be placed directly in front of windows to avoid noise and harsh light, especially for light sleepers. He also cautioned against placing workstations or televisions in bedrooms, as these can interfere with the body’s natural signals for rest.

“In space psychology, pag-step in nimo sa isa ka space, dapat imong mentality, or imong body would be ready to sleep,” said IDr. Manglicmot.

He added that selecting the right mattress is a personal decision. Preferences vary widely, with some people favoring firmer beds and others preferring softer ones that adapt to body contours—something Uratex accounts for with its broad product range.

The event also featured a guest appearance by Kat Karel Lopez, who shared her personal reflections on rest and recovery as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Opening the program, Marvin Vales, Sales Manager of Uratex, welcomed guests and emphasized the importance of promoting sleep awareness through community-driven events like this.

“Today, we come together to highlight the importance of sleep and its vital role in our overall health and well-being,” Vales said.

He spoke about Uratex’s long-standing mission not just to produce quality mattresses but to support better sleep as a foundation for better health.

Uratex also showcased its wide range of mattresses and sleep accessories, inviting guests to visit the showroom at Km.11 McArthur Highway, Brgy. Bago Aplaya, Talomo District, Davao City.

Improving sleep starts with awareness—and with the right combination of knowledge, design, and comfort, better rest is within reach.
