Gilas reloaded

Gilas Pilipinas is back on the Asia Cup stage, and all eyes are on their opening match tomorrow, August 6, against Chinese Taipei in Jeddah. For fans still haunted by that buzzer-beating three that booted us out of the qualifiers last February, this is more than just a game; it's a shot at redemption.

But here's the kicker: the guy who hit that dagger, Chun Hsiang-Lu, won't be suiting up. That alone shifts the momentum in our favor.

What's at stake? Aside from national pride, Gilas is looking to bounce back from a disappointing 9th-place finish in the 2022 edition. This year's squad has a better blend of experience, youth, and chemistry.

June Mar Fajardo will anchor the paint, with Japeth Aguilar providing support. The veterans are still here, and that's not a bad thing. But it's the younger guns that are making waves. Kevin Quiambao and Carl Tamayo have been quietly building rhythm in the previous windows, and their ability to stretch the floor and make smart decisions will be crucial. And then there's Dwight Ramos, who is always dependable and always in the right place at the right time. With his hustle and court smarts, Scottie Thompson brings that PBA MVP grit to international play. Throw in the scoring of CJ Perez, and you have a backcourt rotation that can control tempo and generate quality looks. And Justin Brownlee's presence essentially changes everything.

So, what do we watch for vs. Taipei?

●Defensive rebounding. We can't give up second-chance points.

●Ball movement. No more iso-heavy possessions.

●Limiting turnovers. Control the ball, control the game.

This Gilas team isn't built around one superstar. It's a collective, and that's actually where their strength lies. If the chemistry clicks and the coaching staff finds the proper rotations early, we could be in for a deeper run this time.

Tomorrow's game isn't just about settling the score with Taipei. It's about setting the tone for the tournament, the program, and the fans who've never stopped believing.

Let's rewrite the ending.
