THE city government of Davao has officially declared January as National Bible Month.

On December 5, 2024, the 20th City Council approved the “Bible Month Ordinance” on its third and final reading. The ordinance, proposed by Councilor Pilar Braga, Chairperson of the Committee on Education, Science and Technology, Arts, and Culture, aims to inspire reflection on the teachings of the Bible.

“The ordinance emphasizes inclusivity and respect for all beliefs, focusing on universal principles that unite communities,” Braga shared during the Aprubado sa Konseho session on January 14, 2025, at the Sanguniang Panlungsod.

She emphasized that the ordinance reflects Davao City’s commitment to nurturing both moral and cultural growth, with Bible Month uniting Dabawenyos in shared values while celebrating individual diversity.

Braga also encouraged barangays to organize Bible Month activities within their communities, offering opportunities for residents to participate in Bible studies, youth and family programs, exhibits, seminars, and community events.

Pastor Rueland Badoy, co-convenor of National Bible Month, expressed that this year’s celebration aims to reach a broader audience, now that the ordinance has been passed.

“We want to reach more people,” he said.

In 2017, Former President Rodrigo Duterte signed Proclamation No. 124, declaring January as National Bible Month, with the last week dedicated as National Bible Week. The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) also proclaimed in the same year, further solidifying the observance of Bible Month each January. RGP
