THE Japanese government has announced plans to launch a direct flight from Davao City to Japan and vice versa. This initiative is aimed at bolstering “diplomatic and economic relations” between the two regions, offering greater travel convenience for both business and leisure travelers.

Ishikawa Yoshihisa, Japan's Consul General in Davao, revealed during the celebration of Emperor Naruhito's 65th birthday on February 13, 2025, at the SMX Convention Center in Davao City that Japan is considering launching a direct flight route between Davao City and Japan.

This idea comes on the heels of the Japanese government's recent decision in December 2024 to revise its travel advisory for Mindanao, lowering the risk level for the region. The Davao Region is now already classified as Level 1, indicating that it is safe for travel.

Ishikawa explained that the idea is also driven by Davao City’s status as one of Japan’s sister cities, known for its youthful energy, rapid economic growth, and stable security.

“I am confident that with the new travel advisory, many Japanese companies, investors, tourists and students will visit Mindanao, especially Davao. Hopefully, a direct flight between Davao and Japan will also be established soon. We will also try our best to lower the travel advisory to other parts of Mindanao as soon as possible,” said the Japanese official.

Meanwhile, the new route is expected to open up greater opportunities for tourism, trade, and cultural exchange between the two nations, as Davao's strategic location and increasing economic influence make it a key player in Southeast Asia. The initiative is seen as a way to further promote Japan’s engagement with the Philippines, especially in a city that reflects both vibrancy and stability.

As of the moment, there are no direct flights between Davao City and Japan, and travelers must take connecting flights through Manila or other regional hubs to go to Japan.

The absence of a direct flight route has been a long-standing limitation for Dabawneyos and Japanese visitors alike, making the prospect of a direct connection particularly appealing as it would significantly reduce travel time and increase accessibility between Davao and Japan.

Currently, Davao City has inked sisterhood agreement with three Japanese cities. The first is Kitakyushu, a model city for environmental protection and the first "Eco Town" in Japan. The second is Sennan City, located in Osaka Prefecture, which is an industrialized area with logistics and support industries for airport-related operations. The third is Hamamatsu City, an industrial hub in Shizuoka Prefecture, known for its strong manufacturing base and technological advancements. Hamamatsu is home to major global companies, including Yamaha and Suzuki, and is a leading center for industries such as automotive, musical instruments, robotics, and electronics.

Ishikawa further emphasized that these partnerships have “established a strong foundation for deeper cooperation and stronger ties between Davao and Japan”. DEF
