A REPRESENTATIVE from Junior Chamber International (JCI) has announced plans to extend services to Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDL) at the Davao Prison and Penal Farm, formerly known as the Davao Penal Colony (DaPeCol), as part of their week-long activities.
Maui Maulana, president of JCI Greater Davao, shared that the group will offer free legal services, medical missions, and psychiatric evaluations to PDLs at the Davao Prison and Penal Farm on April 10, 2025, as part of their "Beyond Prison Walls" initiative.
“It is really important because we know the PDLs, they are really like compacted in their jail cells so there are a lot of diseases that they might acquire that’s why we focus on medical missions,” Maulana said during JCI’s media day on April 7, 2025, at Red Corner Restaurant in Bajada.
Maulana said that these services will be available to all PDLs but will particularly focus on juveniles, women, and those who have not had access to legal assistance.
Each year, JCI serves over 300 PDLs through its Beyond Prison Walls program, which includes both legal and medical services.
Last year, the group extended similar services to PDLs at the Panabo City Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP-Panabo).
Jemima Ruth C. Matute, president of JCI Malagos Davao, also outlined several activities for JCI Week, which is themed "Build Better Together." The activities kicked off on April 6, with more planned throughout the week.
Upcoming events include a job fair on April 8 at NCCC Victoria Plaza, offering around 2,400 job vacancies; a bloodletting drive and trivia night on April 9; a tree planting event at Barangay Bucana and an e-games night on April 11; and a culmination sports fest on April 12.
As of April 2025, Davao City is home to about 28 local JCI organizations, part of a nationwide network of more than 200 groups with 2,000 to 3,000 members.
JCI, a membership-based nonprofit for young leaders, was founded in 1915 by Henry Giessenbier Jr. in St. Louis, USA. The JCI movement in the Philippines began in 1947 with the formation of JCI Manila.
