Espedilla: Wants to know the cancer fighting foods (Part 6)

(Foreword: This is our continuation to our response to Amy 468 on her desire to know the cancer fighting foods.)

DEAR Amy 468,

Here’s more of the list to continue your fight against cancer.

Go for the Mighty Bean

Beans are really good. Hmmm. I could not resist the Chilli Beans in a Mexican dish. Gosh, they’re so yummy. I can just have them for the whole day. The good thing here, is they help fight cancer as well. Isn’t that surprising that a really good stuff helps fight cancer, too? It is because these yummy goodies have a lot of potent phytochemicals that may protect the body's cells against damage that can lead to cancer. As a matter of fact, studies in the laboratory showed that they slowed tumor growth and prevented tumors from releasing substances that can damage nearby cells.

Then, there’s the Cabbage Family

Crucifeous vegetables like broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, Brussels sprouts, bok choy, and kale help you win your fight. The good thing here is these members of the cabbage family make a good salad dish and if you want to stir fry them, they are an excellent meal. However, if you really want to get rid off cancer, better not stir fry them. There are a lot of veggie dishes for cruciferous greats out there that can better help you in your quest. As a matter of fact, if I have some luxury of time, I will try to learn to cook yummy veggie dishes, apart from the usual Filipino ones that I used to know.

What is important here is the components in these veggies may help your body defend itself against cancers of the colon, breast, lung, and cervix. Laboratory research for these cruciferous goodies has been promising, but as of the moment, human studies have had mixed results. Well, what is important is, they are good to eat. In the meantime, while the studies are yet to be confirmed, you can try to learn great and fun ways to cook and enjoy them.

Opps, again. There are still more to say but we are running out of space for now. So, we’ll continue this in my next issue. Until then again!
