AS CHILD-laborers who are scavenging in a dumpsite area in Barangay New Carmen Sanitary Landfill, life is very hard and sad being poor, especially if these children are students.
They struggle to go to school, dividing their week as three days in school and two days at the dumpsite.
They do this because they need to balance their studies while sustaining their family needs.
It is good to know that Carmen Integrated School faculty and staff are working hard and exerting all efforts to address the learning needs of the students who are struggling in reading especially the child-scavengers.
Teachers and staff at Carmen Integrated School conduct home visitation and distribute reading materials despite the dumpsite's revolting smell.
They do this in coordination with New Carmen Barangay Council so that the health protocols against Covid-19 are strictly followed and to meet the goal and objectives of the Department of Education (DepEd) that all students must be able to read.
"Education must be delivered even in the remotest area." This mantra holds true to the teachers and staff of Carmen Integrated School. (Arnold A. Opon)
