PEOPLE with poor eyesight may have heard of Lasik surgery when considering ways to improve their vision. But have you ever wondered about the process?

Borough Lasik Center has that question covered.

Dr. Ches Heredia, head surgeon and medical director, said that Lasik is quite a quick and pain-free procedure. The patient can expect numbing of eyes, staring at a light dot, clicking sounds, and smelling faint odors while the operation is ongoing - all of which are normal.

"Lasik is designed to be painless, and there should not be any sharp or severe pain felt during the procedure. However, some report very light pressure sensations which are generally well-tolerated by most patients," he said.

The entire Lasik procedure takes about two hours, from walking into the clinic to leaving the place. It will take an hour to complete the procedure. After the surgery, the patient will have ample time to recuperate in the recovery room, allowing the patient's eyes to adjust properly and safely.

Borough Lasik Center believes in good vision for all and investing in state-of-the-art technology is one way for them to allow all the procedures to last an average of seven minutes per eye.

Just like any other surgery, the Lasik procedure requires post-procedure care. The average recovery time for Lasik is between 24-48 hours but there might be changes to your usual routine for about a couple of weeks since there will be minimal restrictions after the procedure.

Is it safe and effective?

With state-of-the-art technology, Borough Lasik Center provides a high degree of accuracy throughout the procedure, reshaping the cornea with microscopic precision. As Dr. Heredia shared, Lasik lasers are so precise they can write words on hair.

“Lasik is a safe and effective option for vision correction. Having concerns about the safety of the surgery and your eyesight is normal. You owe it to yourself and your vision to research the procedure thoroughly, so you fully understand the complications, risks, and benefits of Lasik,” Dr. Heredia said.

He also mentioned that their doctors are globally trained, well-respected in the local eye industry, and have decades of experience providing patients with life-changing vision.

Maintaining good eyesight after Lasik

Do Lasik results stay permanently, you may be wondering?

To answer this general question, Dr. Heredia said that the longevity of Lasik results varies on a number of factors including the patient's age, the prescription, and overall eye health.

On the bright side, there are several things that patients can take note of after Lasik to help maintain their high visual fidelity according to Dr. Ches Heredia:

·        Protect your eyes from UV rays. Wear sunglasses and a hat outdoors to protect your eyes from harmful UV rays.

·        Avoid rubbing your eyes. For a few days after your Lasik procedure, avoid rubbing your eyes as this can cause the protective flap to become dislodged and potentially damage the cornea (outer eye).

·        Limit screen time. Prolonged screen time can cause eye strain and dry eyes, which can impact your vision. Try to take regular breaks and limit screen time as much as possible.

·        Blue light protection. Removing screen time from your life 2-3 hours before bed every night is highly suggested. More realistically, you could invest in blue-light blocking glasses.

·        Follow a healthy diet. Eating a well-balanced diet rich in healthy proteins, fruits, vegetables, and essential vitamins can help maintain good eye health and reduce the risk of complications.

·        Avoid smoking. Smoking can harm your eyes and reduce the longevity of your Lasik results.

·        Attend regular follow-up appointments. Regular follow-up appointments with your surgeon can help detect and address any changes in your vision and ensure that your Lasik results are maintained.

·        Use artificial tears. If you experience dry eyes, use artificial tears to keep your eyes lubricated and prevent discomfort.
