HOW does eyeglasses-and-contact-lens-free living feel like? This might be one of the big questions people living with poor eyesight ask daily.

To answer this question by many, Borough Lasik Center offers services to help people achieve a clearer vision in life, literally.

Located at Door 8 & 9, JJ's Commune, Loyola St, Bo. Obrero, Davao City, Borough Lasik Center offers various LASIK eye treatments using their state-of-the-art machines. These include the following: PRK & Trans PRK; PresbyMAX; Premium Eye Implant Surgery; and ICL/Lens Replacement.

You may have heard about Lasik before but are still unfamiliar with what exactly it is for. Basically, Lasik (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a popular refractive eye surgery technique used to correct vision problems such as nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), presbyopia, and astigmatism. It is, by far, one of the most studied elective surgical procedures available today.

How safe is Lasik?

Dr. Ches Heredia, head surgeon and medical director, said lasik lasers are so precise they can write words on a strand of hair. How is that possible? Lasik uses advanced computer-driven laser technology to reshape the cornea with microscopic precision.

“A combination of sophisticated technologies is applied to provide a high degree of accuracy throughout the procedure process, helping to ensure patient safety. Borough Lasik Center invests in state-of-the-art technology so that our treatments are safe and quick,” he said.

Based on research, the rate of complications from lasik eye surgery is estimated to be well below one percent. Lasik’s high patient satisfaction rate is due in part to the extremely low risk of complications from the surgery.

However, one’s eyes should be in good health before considering lasik. Certain eye conditions, such as dry eyes, thin corneas, cataracts, glaucoma, or retinal disorders, may disqualify a patient as a candidate or require additional treatment or evaluation beforehand.

To be eligible for lasik, you must be at least 18 years old and above, vision prescription stable for at least one year prior to surgery, have no active eye diseases, infections, or injuries, and no other eye conditions such as dry eye, thin cornea, and good overall health.

“The earlier you get lasik, the better so that you can enjoy your vision for a longer period of time. Once we hit the age of around 45+, our eyes naturally develop conditions such as presbyopia and cataracts,” Dr. Heredia said.

Making Lasik accessible

Lasik is not entirely a new technology. It has been available for years but only a few consider it accessible. This is the gap that Borough Lasik Center is trying to fill - making Lasik accessible to many by offering relatively affordable Lasik procedures.

The center’s laser eye procedures start at P55,000 for both eyes while Lasik procedures start at P60,000. Before undergoing any lasik procedure, patients can avail of the clinic’s free 15-minute lasik suitability test. It may be quite expensive compared to buying eyeglasses or contact lenses but it’s only a one-time investment and is actually cheaper if looked at from a long-term perspective.

A year in Davao

Borough Lasik Center opened its doors in Davao City in January 2022 for its soft opening and had its grand opening in April last year.

To date, its Davao branch has treated over 5,000 eyes. Most of its patients, the center shared, are professionals from different industries in Davao City while some are even from neighboring provinces and cities such as Cagayan de Oro City, General Santos City, Cotabato, and other places in Mindanao.

“With more than 5,000 eyes treated with Borough Lasik Center, each patient has varying reasons why they choose to undergo Lasik such as the aging population, technological advancements, lifestyle changes, fashion and aesthetics, word of mouth, and medical recommendations.

While many were already enlightened on Lasik, especially its safety concerns, Borough Lasik Center sees it as a normal response from patients who are having second thoughts about the procedures.

“Having concerns about the safety of the surgery and your eyesight is normal. You owe it to yourself and your vision to research the procedure thoroughly, so you fully understand the complications, risks, and benefits of Lasik,” the center said.

Borough Lasik Center’s main branch is located at SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City, Metro Manila. It also has a branch at Festive Walk, Megaworld in Iloilo.
