Meditalk: What food should I eat to prevent cancer? (Part 8)

(Foreword: This is our continuation of our response to Amy 468 on her desire to know the cancer fighting foods.)

DEAR Amy 468,

Now, we are indeed in the final approach of our journey in your query about cancer-fighting food.

Here’s more of the list.

1. Go for berries.

Who in the world doesn’t like strawberries? Berries have phytochemicals called ellagic acid. Experts found out that this powerful antioxidant may actually deactivate certain cancer-causing substances while slowing down the growth of cancer cells. However, there is not enough data to prove this and further studies are still ongoing.

2. Choose blueberries

Blueberries, in particular, have potent antioxidants. Antioxidants free the body from free radicals before they can cause damage to the cells. While you’re at it, you can also try topping oatmeal, cold cereal, yogurt, and even salad with blueberries to increase your intake of these healthful berries.

3. Limit sugar intake

Sugar may not give you cancer out rightly. But it may oust other nutrient-rich foods that can help protect you against cancer. It also increases calorie counts, which contributes to being overweight and obesity. Remember that excess weight is also a cancer risk. Go for fruits instead as they offer a sweet alternative packed with vitamins.

4. Don't depend on supplements

As vitamins may help protect against cancer it is only when you get them naturally from food. Supplements may help but they are far inferior compared to what you could get naturally. This is supported by both the American Cancer Society and the American Institute for Cancer Research. So, my dear, there are no short cuts. Eat healthy. It is the best diet for you.

Good luck!
