FEMININE hygiene is something that women should talk more openly about. In this article, I will be sharing how I maintain mine.

But first, let’s answer some of the most commonly asked questions by women about the intricacies of our lady garden.

• What should mine smell like?

Our female reproductive organ has a unique smell. It’s a musky scent that changes depending on the food that you ate or how physically active you are. Vaginal odor is normal and natural and is nothing to be ashamed of. But if you notice a really pungent odor that smells like fish, it is best to consult your doctor for possible infections or other health concerns.

• Is it safe to use feminine products? (feminine wash, pantyliners and feminine napkins)

Chemical ingredients in feminine washes sold in the market can cause irritation. A friend of mine suffered from yeast infection and had excessive discharge before learning that she is allergic to feminine wash. Most feminine washes contain fragrances and cleansing ingredients that may be too harsh for our vagina.

I use the Human Nature natural feminine wash in cooling chamomile because it is organic and free from harsh cleansing ingredients and synthetic fragrances. It also has great odor protection that works even after a long day.

Pantyliners and feminine napkins, meanwhile, should be used only when needed to prevent irritation. If you use feminine napkins when you are on your period, it is recommended to change it every four hours.

Pantyliners on the other hand limits air circulation, which means daily use can actually be harmful.

Also, some of the pantyliner and napkin material can also make its way inside your vagina. I use the Human Nature protection for red days’ feminine wash to help remove residues from sanitary products whenever I am on my period. It helps lessen the discomfort and itching as well.

A quick search online however showed healthier alternatives to pantyliners and napkins. Menstrual cups are available online as well as reusable cloth pads. Both kinds are reusable which means it is better for the environment. Try it and see what works for you!

• How often should I wash mine?

I wash mine twice a day using the Human Nature feminine wash in cooling chamomile. Some women I know use feminine wash every other day while some prefer to use water only once or twice a day. There are also women who use natural alternatives like tawas water. It’s really different for everybody. You have to spend time to explore what works best for you. Just remember not to overdo it. The vagina needs good bacteria to keep itself healthy. Washing it too much can strip away the vagina’s good bacteria which may instead lead to infection.

Some tips:

Always wear clean underwear. There are instances where little choice is left, but as much as you can, wear clean underwear and refrain from using “Side B” because sweat and bacteria has already accumulated in your panty on the first day it was used. You can use pantyliners in cases like this. You may also opt to purchase disposable underwear. Also avoid using new underwear without washing it first.

Let your vagina breathe. Wear cotton panties and loose clothing as much as possible or when you are at home. Tight clothing and panties made of non-breathable cloth type restricts air circulation. Take a break from non-breathable panties and tight jeans every now and then. Your vagina will thank you for it.

Lastly, it is best to visit your doctor regularly.

Keeping our feminine area healthy contributes to our overall health. Knowing how to take care of it, what products to use and avoid makes a big difference. Try my tips or share yours with me. I’d love to hear it.
