Skincare in my 40s

FOR someone who stays outdoors most of the time, it is definitely important that I constantly protect my skin.

We can no longer deny the fact that as we age, our skin needs more attention and care. Its elasticity is not as good as before, and aging is said to be one of its main causes due to hormonal changes and pollution, among others. As a result, lines and wrinkles become visible. We can also notice the sagging of our skin.

Based on studies, our skin’s health starts to deteriorate when we reach the age of 25. And this worsens when we are already in our 30s or 40s.

As a 41-year-old certified Tita of Davao (an old lady at that), I did not realize how important the regular use of skin care products is until I was in my mid-30s. The “awakening” took place when I suddenly noticed some dark spots on my face. I am no mestiza yet it felt like I had freckles all over my face. Thus, I was forced to research and ask around how I can start taking care of my skin, especially my face, more.

Following a healthy diet, particularly consuming vitamin-rich fruits and vegetables, surely has numerous benefits. Apart from this, there are two products as well that we can embrace to help improve our skin and its elasticity. These will complement the much-needed consumption of food filled with essential vitamins and antioxidants.

  1. Moisturizer. While we use lotion and creams to keep our arms and legs glowing, we can likewise apply moisturizer on our face to hydrate it. Once it lacks moisture, damage can happen. It will become dry and dull. We have to make sure, though, that our face is clean before we put moisturizer. As advised, it would be better if it is applied while the skin is damp or a little wet because the moisture will be locked in.

To find the right brand, we must always consider our skin type.

  1. Sunblock/sunscreen. This is not just any sun protection. It has to be broad spectrum, which means that it can protect us both from ultraviolet A and B radiation (UVA and UVB). The UVA, by the way, is the one that causes premature ageing, while exposure to UVB results in sunburn.

At the same time, we must look for sunscreen with at least 30 sun protection factor (SPF). But, the higher, the better. We can scour for brands with SPF 50 to get 98 percent protection from the harmful rays of the sun.

These are just two of the many products we can use for our daily skin-care routine. However, these two have been my best friends and constant allies.

It is not yet late to care for our skin and make it radiant and supple.
