Spotlight on Ayla Pearls and Bina Batik

Now in its fourth year, Park Inn by Radisson Davao continues to highlight the region’s craftsmanship and cultural richness through its annual Kadayawan exhibits.

Ayla Pearls, renowned for its authentic South Sea pearls, returns with pieces ranging from everyday elegance to high-luxury statement jewelry—showcased in Dubai and Singapore. Joining them is Cotabato City’s Bina Batik, which revitalizes traditional Southeast Asian textiles with modern silhouettes, using upcycled fabrics to promote sustainability.

“This year marks our fourth Kadayawan celebration at the hotel through a themed exhibit,” said Sven Toune, General Manager of Park Inn by Radisson Davao. “We’re taking a fresher approach by highlighting wearable art—from handcrafted clothing to jewelry—that reflects local creativity and sustainability. We’re also proud to launch Tela Tales, an SMHCC-led initiative supporting artisans and communities while reducing hotel waste.”

Tela Tales: Fashion with a Purpose

One of the event’s highlights was the launch of Tela Tales, a sustainability initiative by SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation (SMHCC) that transforms condemned hotel linens into functional, marketable fashion pieces. The project aims to create a circular economy connecting hospitality and local communities.

Spearheaded by Chef Leah Magallanes, Tela Tales has already been implemented in other SMHCC properties, including Park Inn by Radisson Iloilo and Bacolod, Pico Sands Hotel, and Taal Vista Hotel, and has now reached Davao.

To bring the project to life, SMHCC partnered with Davao-born designer Dars Juson, co-founder of Manila-based label REPAMANA, known for transforming discarded textiles into striking fashion. Juson mentored the women-led community group Think Outside the Trash, supported by Councilor Tek Ocampo, in producing the debut Tela Tales collection—symbolizing empowerment, sustainability, and craftsmanship.

The first collection features a vanity kit, tote bag, and bucket hats in plain and dyed styles, using the traditional Japanese shibori technique of binding, folding, twisting, and clamping fabric before dyeing.

During the launch, Chef Magallanes presented the concept behind Tela Tales and other SMHCC sustainability programs aligned with its goal to reach Net Zero by 2040. A panel discussion with Chef Magallanes, Juson, Councilor Ocampo, and GM Toune followed.
