2 OFWs repatriated from Sudan arrive in Davao

TWO overseas Filipino workers (OFW) who were affected by the unrest in Sudan have returned to Davao on Friday, May 5.

In a report from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), the two OFWs, who hailed from Tagum City, Davao del Norte, were identified as Silas Jomel Mallari and Hamprey Manipi.

According to Mallari, they went through a lot of hardship during their stay in Sudan due to the ongoing air strikes, bombings, and gunshots.

He said that he saw dead bodies left on the road. The nervousness they felt, he added, was intense because they were only three kilometers away from the war zone.

Mallari worked as a chef in Sudan for the past eight months.

According to OWWA, there are 20 OFWs from Davao Region working in Sudan.

In addition to the data are 18 OFWs who have been rescued and are just waiting to return to the country.

In April, clashes broke out across Sudan, particularly in the capital city of Khartoum, between the rival camps of Sudan military leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and paramilitary Rapid Support Forces commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.

This forced the Philippine government to undertake a massive evacuation operation for the hundreds of OFWs in Sudan.
