THE City Government of Davao awarded four villages (barangays) as the most child-friendly barangays for 2016 on Wednesday, November 28, at the Sunny Point Function Hall, Maa, Davao City.
“Davao City is one of the most asked on how we sustain the best practices in the protection of children,” City Social Services and Development Office (CSSDO) head Malou Bermudo said on her speech at the event on Wednesday, adding that the said awarding is one of the sustaining activities of the city to be a child-friendly city.
Category A winner is Barangay Matina Aplaya, category B winner is Tugbok Proper, category C winner is Biao Escuela, and category D winner is Balengaeng. The competing barangays are categorized according to their scaled internal revenue allotment (IRA).
The 2016 child-friendly barangays were just awarded this year because due to the lengthy screening process of the programs implemented by the barangays.
Barangay captain of Matina Aplaya Nestor Cirunay said that they think that one of the factors why they were chosen by the city was because of their effort for mini libraries, resolutions, and programs involving children in their area.
“Maghimo pa gyud mi ug mga ordinances and resolution aron ma-improve pa gyud ang barangay in term of being child-friendly (We will pass more ordinances and resolutions to improve our barangay in terms of being child-friendly,” Cirunay said in a phone interview on Wednesday.
According to a document from the Davao City Council for the Welfare of Children (DCCWC), the search for the most child-friendly barangay was proposed to "improve and sustain the Barangay Council for the Protection of Children (BCPC)", where each awarded barangay was given P50,000 as cash prize.
Meanwhile, model barangays for 2012-2015 were also awarded during the awarding ceremony for the search for the most-friendly barangay for 2016 at Sunny Point Function Plaza, Maa, Davao City.
Model barangay for 2012 is Barangay Sasa, Barangay Buhangin for 2013, Barangay Mintal for 2014, and Barangay Calinan for 2015.
