WALK the fault in other segments of the Davao Central Fault System will be one of the programs that will be pushed by the Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) to determine the specific locations of these active faults and to caution the public dwelling in these areas.

Office of the Civil Defense Davao Region (OCD-Davao) operations head Franz Irag said in a press briefing on Wednesday at Waterfront Insular Hotel Davao that disaster preparedness among the communities must be further strengthened following the series of disasters like earthquake that struck the region.

“I think high time na gyud nga pakusgan pa gyud nato ug maayo ang atoang information, education campaign mahitungod sa disaster preparedness nato aron mas mahimo pang luwas unya malikayan pod ang misinformation sama sa nahitabo nga nikalit og panagan ang mga tawo gikan sa coastal barangays tungod sa giingon nga tsunami (I think it is high time to intensify our information, education campaign (IEC) on disaster preparedness to protect the people and avoid dissemination of false information just as what happened before when the people coming from coastal barangays rushed to higher grounds because of fake tsunami alert),” Irag said.

In July this year, OCD-Davao together with the officials from the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) stepped up a walk the fault activity in the Davao Central Fault System and found out the exact location of the fault lines in Barangay Bago Oshiro and Mintal.

“Considering sa kadako sa area, we just focused sa Mintal and Bago Oshiro which is mao pod ang pinakadaghan og population sa kato nga mga segment (Considering the scope of the area, we just focused first in Mintal and Bago Oshiro which have huge population),” he said.

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST)-Phivolcs listed a total of 60 barangays in Davao City that transect in the Central Davao Fault System, which is comprised of five segments including the Tamugan Fault with 25 kilometers (kms) length,Lacson Fault with 33 kms, Lacson Fault with 33 kms,Pangyan-Biao with 33 kms, and the 12-kilometer New Carmen Fault.

“Later on the city disaster will continue the activity wherein ma-target ang other segment sa fault system and ma-inform ang uban barangays or community na naa didto (will target other segments in the fault system and inform the communities there). That’s one of the major activities of the city disaster next year,” he said.
