City implements measures vs Covid-19 for fire evacuees

THE City Government of Davao is implementing health measures against the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) for evacuees who were affected by a fire in Bunawan District, Davao City.

At 2:40 a.m. Wednesday, April 29, 2020, a fire razed several houses in New Society Village, Barangay Ilang, Bunawan District, Davao City, which started at 2:40 a.m.

During an interview on 87.5 FM Davao City Disaster Radio yesterday, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio said City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO) has recorded an estimated 300 to 400 affected families affected due to the fire incident.

Based on Bunawan Police reports, the fire started at the house of a certain Ronald Barrio and immediately spread to neighboring houses since these are only made of light materials.

Firemen struggled to put out the fire, which gutted around 250 houses, for three hours and declared fire out at 5:30 a.m.

In a Facebook post of one Ian Deles, burnt pigs were seen as their owner failed to secure them to safety as they already panicked when the fire broke out.

Firemen did not yet divulge the cause of the fire and the estimated worth of damage. However, they reported that there was no fatality caused by the fire.

Barangay Ilang immediately assisted the affected residents and the CSWDO has already conducted validation on the victims so that they can receive assistance from the City Government.

Duterte-Carpio said the city has initially deployed a mobile kitchen to feed the affected families. Also, relief goods and "starter packs" would also be distributed to them.

The mayor said Barangay Ilang officials are already preparing two areas, which would serve as a temporary shelter to those families who lost their homes from the fire. One is an open area and a gymnasium. The mayor did not divulge where the open area for temporary shelters will be.

The mayor said the City Government will be personally mounting tents per household in the open areas. This is to ensure that social distancing would still be implemented amid the Covid-19 outbreak.

Since Barangay Ilang has a specific area that was placed under lockdown, a separate temporary shelter will be mounted for those families supposedly under strict quarantine, but were also affected by the fire.
